Industry and Trade

The information panel in Horitschon is dedicated to the topic Industry and Trade. In addition to the iron industry this topic includes the production of ceramics, agricultural products, spices, tableware, and luxury goods. The most important export goods since the late Celtic period were products of the iron industry. Traces of Celtic opencast mining of iron ore can be clearly seen in the district of Oberpullendorf, in particular in the Unterpullendorf Zerwald forest. The local pottery producers primarily covered the local demand for commodity goods. However, Pannonian tableware was traded as far as the eastern parts of Noricum. Bricks, pipes, slabs, and other materials for the construction industry came from local producers, but also from military brickyards. The agricultural products of the farms were used to supply the nearby towns and military camps. Vessels in which culinary specialities were transported give proof of the active trade relations with the south. For instance, wine, oil, sauces, fruits, and mussels and other delicacies were traded. Furthermore, silk and brocade and many other luxury items, for instance furniture, were imported.
