Roman Road Construction and the Tabula Peutingeriana
The information panel covers the topic Roman Road Construction and the Tabula Peutingeriana. As described on the panel, the Romans used the Amber Road not only as a trade route, but also for the transport of troops and as a safe way for transporting the imperial mail between Italy and Carnuntum. The overland roads were built on a solid foundation of bigger stones. Two or three additional layers of coarse gravel formed the substructure. Outside of settlements the road surface consisted of a layer of pebble stones. In the vicinity of towns the roads were paved with irregularly shaped stone slabs, as can still be seen in Sopron (Scarbantia) and Szombathely (Savaria).
