Military Camps

In 2007 the largest coherent archaeological settlement of Burgenland was discovered in the Strebersdorf/Frankenau area, containing more than 13500 finds, which are scientifically analysed at the Austrian Archaeological Institute. The site is located west of the confluence of the Raiding- and Stoob rivers on a gentle mountain ridge respectively on its southern slope in between the villages of Strebersdorf and Frankenau. In Strebersdorf three military camps (Camps I – III) were built on the ridge at different times and one on top of the other and furthermore a temporary camp (Camp IV), which was discovered in 2012.  The strategic position of the camps on the eastern edge of the mountain ridge between the Raiding and Stoob rivers allows a clear view towards the Amber Road leading north and south. An information board, which was put up in 2024, provides an overview of the special features of the four military camps.
